With an area of 3.420,86 km2, Overijssel is the fourth largest province of the Netherlands (8, 23% of its total surface). It has 1.130.380 inhabitants (6,84% of the total Dutch population in 2009).

With a Gross Regional Domestic Product of ?28b, Overijssel is responsible for 5,6% of the Dutch GDP. The annual growth rate in the period 2000-2008 was 4,2%, slightly lower than the Dutch average of 4,5%. Employment rates are highest in the services sector (66%) and the sectors of public administration and defence, compulsory social security; education; health and social work (31%). Employment rates are lowest in the Agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing sector (3,6%).
